Recently granted Apple patent could turn your iPhone into a whole-home remote

You can already use your iPhone to control your Netflix streaming, home security cameras and sprinkler system, but in the future, the humble smartphone may become even more powerful. A recent report from AppleInsider reveals that Apple has secured a patent that would allow it to transform its mobile devices into supercharged universal remote controls.

The recently secured patent outlines a broad control system for the iPhone, which would integrate with not only basic home theater components like TVs, A/V receivers and game consoles, but also environmental systems and smart home devices. The interface would be able to ?recall, store and set things like lighting, channels, music and window shades? under ?scenes? that could be named by the user.?

iphone-remote-control-patentSo if you wanted to, say, play Halo, the remote might dim the lights, fire up an Xbox console, crank up your surround-sound system, and close the shades. With more and more TV and media content being encoded for use with second-screen apps, your media could even ?talk back? to your iPhone, leaving limitless possibilities for further integration.

Apple?s expansion into multimedia control certainly stirs up conjecture that the company may be building more enticing options for an Apple television, if and when it goes into production. For now, the new remote system has us asking a more practical question: How would it work? The iPhone 5 doesn?t have an infrared (IR) blaster, or radio-frequency (RF) transmitter, which severely limits the proposed system?s ability to control devices that use these protocols for basic functions like powering on, channel control, and so on.

One simple solution would be a hub device (like Logitech?s Harmony Ultimate Hub), which connects to a local network, receives commands from the iPhone via Wi-Fi, and retransmits them housewide through IR and RF blasts. Using the hub as a ?translator,? the iPhone could effectively talk with gaming consoles, Blu-ray players, TVs, and almost any other device that can use a remote. Either that, or the iPhone 5S will need to come with some very specific hardware upgrades.

One thing?s for sure: Like most Apple rumors, the company?s proposed venture into the realm of multimedia control brings up more questions than answers. Apple applied for the patent five years ago, so implementation could have already been scrapped ? or still years away. In the mean time, there?s still hope.?Other new devices like?Philips? hue LED lighting?make the once-outlandish idea of manipulating an entire room from a single device much more feasible ? and not just for the super rich.

Shopify's integrated retail platform merges online and in-store sales (video)

DNP Shopify

Mobile payment options like Square have been a boon to small business owners, and now Shopify is looking to expand the potential of point of sale systems with its new platform. The company is branching out from its online retail roots by offering a way to merge in-store and internet sales with a combined inventory system. Shop owners can choose which items they want to sell online or in their brick and mortar stores, while the POS app synchronizes the process. Additionally, Shopify comes with an iPad-compatible credit card reader, email receipts and detailed analytics. If you're in the market for an integrated retail system, the expanded hardware kit might be worth checking out; it includes a cash drawer, iPad stand and receipt printer. New Wildlife Series for Discovery Channel, Animal Planet

New Wildlife Series for Discovery Channel, Animal Planet

By Joanna Padovano

Published: August 26, 2013

EDINBURGH/SILVER SPRING: Killer Islands (working title), led by wildlife expert and adventurer Dave Salmoni, is set to broadcast next year on Discovery Channels around the world and Animal Planet in the U.S.

Killer Islands watches as Salmoni explores exotic islands that are home to some of the planet's most dangerous creatures, including hammerhead sharks and grizzly bears. The six-part program, a co-production between Discovery Networks International (DNI) and Animal Planet, is produced by Silverback Films. It will begin airing on Discovery Channel in EMEA, Asia Pacific and Latin America as well as Animal Planet in the U.S. in the spring and summer of 2014, respectively.

"This is Discovery at its best: exploring areas unknown and providing unprecedented access to awe-inspiring environments," noted Julian Bellamy, the creative director and head of production and development for DNI. "Dave Salmoni's extraordinary wildlife expertise, captured by world class filmmakers, has produced that rare hybrid of blue chip programming: natural history and adventure set against a spine-tingling mystery?making Killer Islands (wt) a truly incredible series and must-see programming event."

"In Killer Islands (wt), we have the unique opportunity to take our audiences along with Dave Salmoni to experience and explore the extraordinary and unknown corners of our planet," added Marjorie Kaplan, the group president for Animal Planet, Science and Velocity. "We may lead 'civilized' lives, but we want to feel the awe and exhilaration of knowing those wild places exist."

Major League Baseball 2013: Tampa Bay Rays add 2 players for the stretch run

On Sep. 1, all 30 Major League Baseball teams will be able to expand their rosters to 40 people. That expansion will provide ample opportunity for teams to add depth, bring up younger players for trial major league runs and give weary starters some much-needed rest.

Some teams aren't waiting until the start of next month.

One of those teams is the Tampa Bay Rays. Tampa is a team that has lacked depth, especially on offense all season long.

In fact, with the notable exceptions of third baseman Evan Longoria and rookie outfielder Wil Myers, the Tampa lineup has been relatively inconsistent, and at times a real weakness.

Within the last 48 hours, Tampa Bay has added two players who could provide a boost for the offense as the playoff race really heats up.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets that the Rays have signed former No.1 pick, Delmon Young to a minor-league deal.

Ten years ago, Young was not just Tampa's first round draft pick, he was the No 1 pick overall in a 2003 draft class that included Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, Carlos Quentin, Matt Kemp, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Jonathan Papelbon. In 2012, he was a member of the Detroit Tigers and won MVP of the ALCS.

That impressive resume didn't prevent Young from being released by the struggling Philadelphia Phillies.

Young is still, for lack of a better word, young. He's only 27, and it was one year ago that Young had a fairly respectable season for the Detroit Tigers. He hit .267 with 18 home runs and 74 RBIs. In 2010, while playing in Minnesota, Young put together his best season, hitting .298 with 21 home runs and 112 RBIs.

He's a very intriguing buy-low type of pick up for the Rays, who could use more offense, especially since they're eighth in the AL in runs scored.

Young isn't the only experienced bat that the team has acquired in the last 24 hours.

Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago tweeted Thursday morning that the Rays put in a waiver claim on outfielder David DeJesus.

DeJesus was actually acquired by the Washington Nationals this past Monday, and immediately placed on revocable waivers.

Friday afternoon, the Washington Post reported that he was now officially a member of the Rays.

It isn't a bad change of scenery for DeJesus, who goes from the out-of-contention Cubs, to the disappointing Nationals, to perennial contender Tampa Bay.

The moves immediately add depth to a Rays lineup that has struggled to find consistent health and offensive production from the designated hitter and outfield spots.

Desmond Jennings has been hurt, and ever prior to his injury he was having a subpar season.

Luke Scott is on the disabled list. Kelly Johnson started the season red-hot, but has since cooled and has seen his power production tail off.

Sam Fuld has a nice glove and can run the bases, but as his .197 batting average -- and .268 on-base percentage -- illustrates, he's not great at actually producing much offensively.

Matt Joyce had 14 home runs two months ago. Now he's got 16. The drop off in outfield production coupled with the injury to Luke Scott makes acquiring both players smart, and potentially very meaningful.

Young is especially intriguing. He's got serious talent, and while he's certainly not lived up to his hype, there's still time for him to become a late-bloomer.

DeJesus doesn't have the upside of Young. But when he's playing well, he's got a decent glove, hits for some power, can steal a base and he's got a career batting average of .279 and career on-base percentage of .353.

A healthy Jennings and stud rookie Wil Myers will be in Rays manager Joe Maddon's lineup everyday, but that still leaves one position in flux, and either Young or DeJesus could become a solid fill-in or backup.

Neither move is equal to the Red Sox acquisition of Jake Peavy, but both moves could be just what the Rays need to push them from AL East division contenders, to champs.

Grin and bear it: Madonna sports gold grill at 55

Celebs

Madonna, who turned 55 last week, is clearly embracing the golden years if the gold bracing on her teeth is any indication.

Image: Madonna

Gregorio Borgia / AP

Flashing a big smile for cameras in Rome on Wednesday, the pop star is currently sporting a shiny grill that outlines several of her top teeth. The fashion accessory popped up on the singer's Instagram a couple months ago, where she wrote, "Don't hate me. Hate my #grilz."

Madonna was in the Italian capital this week for the opening of another branch of her Hard Candy fitness studio. (Sorry, Gold's Gym ? synergy fail). Just when we were starting to get used to those gloves she can't take off, along comes the grill.

Image: Madonna

It's a look that Miley Cyrus (among others) has sunk her teeth into lately. She's all about the grill in the video for "We Can't Stop." But while Miley attributes her ongoing evolution to "puberty," we're confident we won't get the same excuse from Madonna.

But like her much-younger peers, it is safe to say it's probably just a phase for the Material Girl. She's given us so many of them over the years, this one isn't worth frowning over.

10 Uses for Mostly Useless Chemical Elements

As the name would suggest, the transuranics are those elements with atomic numbers higher than that of uranium, and are typically synthesized in a lab. While neptunium through curium have their places, mostly in nuclear power, berkelium starts a sea of relative uselessness. The elements beginning with einsteinium and going up, in fact, have never been spotted in nature. Most have half-lives of a minute or even fractions of a second, which factors into their not-so-abundant nature.

Uses: Physicists believe that there may be an "island of stability" above these elements with comparatively prolonged half-lives. You know, if we could manage to make the darn things. To that end, creating and studying the transuranics in the lab is a step toward one day perhaps finding even heavier elements.

FBI says Miss Teen USA Cassidy Wolf victim of 'sextortion' scheme'; 'Duck Dynasty's' Willie Robertson attends fans' wedding; Robin Thicke sues Marvin Gaye family, Funkadelic: Weekend entertainment news links

The FBI says Miss Teen USA Cassidy Wolf was targeted by hackers who broke into her bedroom webcam. 'Duck Dynasty' star Willie Robertson surprised two fans by dropping by their wedding Saturday. Here's a sampling of what's trending online in entertainment news this weekend.

MISS TEEN USA 'SEXTORTION' VICTIM?: The FBI says Cassidy Wolf, who was crowned Miss Teen USA on Aug. 10, may have been the victim of a "sextortion" scheme. Agents are investigating allegations that hackers broke into her bedroom webcam several months ago. They then attempted to extort nude photographs from the 19-year-old Temecula, Calif., resident by falsely claiming they had found embarrassing images on the webcam. FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said agents believe they have identified the person behind the scheme, but that no arrests have been made. (msn.com)

'DUCK DYNASTY' NUPTIALS: A Pennsylvania couple moved their wedding to a Field & Stream store near Pittsburgh Saturday just on the off chance of meeting "Duck Dynasty" star Willie Robertson. The gambit paid off, too. The bearded reality star was in town for a promotional appearance at the store and showed up at the ceremony. Bride Mehgan Cook was wearing a comma sash on her wedding dress, and groom Charlie Miller was decked heat-to-toe in camouflage gear. WTAE-TV reports Robertson told the couple to always love and forgive one another. (yahoo.com)

ON THE LINKS WITH THE PREZ: Golfing with comedian Larry David would seem to be a risky proposition. One bad shot and you might find yourself the target of the sort of acerbic one-liners and sarcastic barbs that made "Seinfield" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" so popular. But David -- who co-created "Seinfeld" and produced and starred in HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" -- was likely on his best behavior Saturday at the Farm Neck Golf Club in Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard. One of his golfing partners was President Barack Obama, who is no slouch himself when it comes to delivering biting one-liners. He also has the added benefit of being Commander in Chief of the U.S. Armed Forces. Not the sort of guy you want to make fun of for taking an 8 on the 9th hole. The president is vacationing on the Massachusetts island. David is there filming a HBO movie, "Clear History." whose new film is set on Martha's Vineyard where the president is winding up his weeklong vacation. (yahoo.com)

ROCK REUNION GROWS: The Replacements haven't played together in public for more than 22 years. That will change next weekend when Paul Westerberg and bassist Tommy Stinson team up Aug. 25 in Toronto for the first of three Riot Fest Shows. The band will also perform Sept. 15 in Chicago and Sept. 21 in Denver. Word is that two of Westerberg's pals for his solo days -- drummer Josh Freese and Guitart Dave Minehan -- have been hired on to perform with the band. (Rolling Stone)

ROBIN THICKE SUES: "Blurred Lines" is going from the pop charts to the court docket. Robin Thicke, T.I and Pharrell Williams filed suit this week in federal court asking a judge to rule that their hit single does not violate copyrights from Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up" and Funkadelic's "Sexy Ways." The pre-emptive move was taken, according to the lawsuit, because both Gaye's family and Funkadelic have alleged that "Blurred Lines" copies their work. (USA Today)

Looking for a smartphone with a large display, decent specs and a price tag just shy of $300 unlocked and contract-free? It's not an easy thing to find here in the US of A, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. In fact, a little-known manufacturer out of Miami known as BLU is doing its darndest to get on the map and show off its brute handset-making skills at a reasonable cost. It's been a big player in the KIRF arena for quite some time, but its latest lineup of phones -- Life -- appears to have a bit of personality of its own. Of the devices in the Life series, we've received an early unit of the Life View, a 5.7-inch Android model, from our friends at Negri Electronics, an online retailer that recently began selling the device for $299. Portable Practical Pediatrics, home of Pedcasts - Children's Health ...

The Tired Teen (Pedcast)

Doc Smo here, you know Dr. Paul Smolen, your pedcast host. ?Today we are going to discuss a topic that is most relevant for parents with teens in the house.?? You folks with younger children, you listen up as well:? your time is coming before you know it. We all know that teenagers tend to be moody but what should a parent do when their child has persistent fatigue and changes in mood. Well, that?s the topic we are going to take on today. ? It?s not too uncommon for parents to bring their teenagers to the pediatrician with physical complaints of fatigue, irritability,? dizziness, and sleep problems.? More times than not, these physical complaints turn out to due to difficulties with mood, either excessive sadness, worry, or even anger.? As a pediatrician, I always have my radar up for physical symptoms that might indicate a serious disease process but most of the time fatigue is an emotional symptom.? So once we are sure that our tired teen does not have fatigue from a something like diabetes or thyroid disease, what?s next?? How can we help them feel better?? I thought it would be useful to take a few moments and share with you my practical suggestions that I have found can be very helpful to children and families in who find themselves in this situation? having physical symptoms from emotional fatigue and stress. ? ? I think step one is to visit a pediatrician who has cared for your child and knows them well.? I think a large part of the healing process comes from a child feeling that those around them care and take their complaints seriously.? Reassuring them that they don?t have some dreaded disease by taking their complaints seriously is also an important aspect of the doctor visit.? I feel this is best done by someone who they already know and trust. Don?t underestimate the power of a health professional listening, touching, reassuring, and demonstrating understanding. ? Next I suggest that all my tired teens work on a few things that have been shown to improve mood in anyone, child or adult: ? -I make sure that they are getting enough physical exercise. ?I think they should exercise a minimum of an hour a day.? Walking is fine, riding a bike, throwing a Frisby, whatever but they need to get out and do it!? Movement and enjoyment is the key! And I mean out, that?s outside where there are green trees and lots of light.? Light sets our clocks for sleep and can help your child get enough sleep and the light also improves their mood?for real. Actually researchers have found that physical exercise is as effective at improving mood as most anti-depressants and a whole lot cheaper and safer! -Next, we go over their sleep habits and possibly make improvements there. Experts think that children older than 12 years old need 8-9 hours of sleep nightly. Regular bedtimes, turning off electronics, quieter activities in the evening are an important part of a healthy sleep formula.? I encourage the child to establish a regular bedtime ROUTINE. Many parents tell me that evening, near bedtime, is a good time to talk about your child?s feeling.? Bedside conversations like these can be very powerful and I think you should try and initiate these talks. ?Enforce no cell phones or other electronics in your teens room. ? -Nutrition is also an important aspect of mood and energy.? I explain to the tired teen that certain fats found in fish and other foods can really be helpful.?? Fish consumption or an omega 3 supplement is a must as is vitamin D supplementation? in case the child?s level should be low.? In this situation, I actually recommend a multivitamin, especially if the teen?s diet is poor.? It also goes without saying that reducing soda, caffeine, and processed food will help anyone feel better. ? -Finally, I think that having friends, helping others, and being praised for even the smallest of achievements can all be very uplifting activities. I encourage families who have a tired teen to try all these things. Parents can facilitate their child?s friendships by making an extra effort to provide transportation and activities their teens might like as well as encourage their teen to help around the house, neighborhood, or community? and of course they can praise and recognize any helpfulness, success, or healthy attitude their teen exhibits. ? ? And finally, I think a follow-up visit to assess how your teen is doing is really important at which time we determine if things are getting better or a mental health referral is indicated.? Let me reiterate that what we have talked about is for mildly depressed or anxious teens and not for children with severe disturbances in mood or behavior.? If these measures doesn?t improve things for your child or you think they may be having serious thoughts of harming themselves or others, please?. get some professional psychological help.? You?ll be glad you did. ? For more portable, practical parenting information, take a few minutes and explore the literally hundreds of pedcasts and articles posted at my blog, www.docsmo.com.? Your comments and stories are always welcome and of course we love when you share these posts with friends and family.? This is Doc Smo, hoping you can find a simple step to increase your teen?s pep. Until next time.

Confusing Newspaper Article Implies Link between Autism and ...

Autism Speaks provides clarification, with a nod to Forbes for clearing up the confusion in the mass media

On Sunday,?The New York Times?published a science story with the frightening headline ?Autism?s Unexpected Link to Cancer.? What the article does not make clear is the fact that individuals with autism do not ? repeat, do NOT ? have an increased risk of cancer.

This is made clear in a thoughtful piece by Forbes science columnist Emily Willingham. It?s titled ?Dear New York Times: Cancer and Autism Are Not Parallels.?

So if The New York Times piece gave you a start, here?s the crux of Ms. Willingham?s clarification:

?For parents and autistic people who might have read the headline and the article and added 'cancer' to their list of worries, here?s another bit of information the article omitted: The mutations in the PTEN gene that are linked to autism tend to be different from those for PTEN-associated cancer. Indeed, they affect the resulting protein in different, less extreme ways, and research indicates no correlation between PTEN-associated cancers and PTEN-associated ASDs.?

?It's worth noting that we?re not seeing any increase of cancer in individuals with autism,? comments Autism Speaks Senior Vice President for Scientific Affairs Andy Shih. ?The importance of the research being referenced has to do with the identification of a common genetic pathway as a possible target for medical treatment. That?s the real story here, not cancer.??

Church in Zimbabwe in jeopardy again

The Anglican Church in Zimbabwe is once again in a vulnerable position, following the re-election of Robert Mugabe. Robert Marquand of The Christian Science Monitorhas the story, which includes this information:

The chief Anglican bishop in Zimbabwe, Chad Gandiya, last week accused a renegade clergyman and friend of Mugabe of restarting a campaign using brutality, the courts and police to seize churches, orphanages and missions owned by mainstream Anglicans.

Gandiya told AP that Nolbert Kunonga, a defrocked bishop who stumped for Mugabe and last week called him a leader ?sent from God,? is using the emotion around the landslide vote as an opportunity to seize property associated with the Church of England. ...

Gandiya told reporters that Kunonga last week sent thugs into his own home in Harare, where they stole cellphones and records of church holdings and personnel.

Gandiya also said that in the area of Murewa, outside Harare, local police are supporting Kunonga?s effort to take over a mission, and to evict 100 children from the Shearly Cripps orphanage, first started by British and American missionaries.

I've just returned from a conference at which several Zimbabweans and expatriates were present, and these developments are just what they feared.

Ex-Microsoft exec, son die in Connecticut crash

EAST HAVEN, CT -

A fire department official say four bodies have been pulled from the site of where a small plane crashed into two Connecticut homes.

Anthony Moscato of the East Haven Fire Department said Saturday that the bodies of two people from the plane and two people in one of the homes were recovered overnight. The deputy chief says authorities now believe those were the only victims.

Authorities previously said that two children in a home were missing. They were ages 1 and 13.

A family member identified two of the dead as former Microsoft executive Bill Henningsgaard and his teenage son, Maxwell, who were in the plane.

The multi-engine, propeller-driven plane struck two small homes a few blocks from Tweed New Haven Airport as it came in to land Friday.

Blair Henningsgaard says his brother Bill and nephew Maxwell were traveling the East Coast to visit colleges, and Connecticut was part of the itinerary.

He says the family learned it was his brother's plane through the tail number.

Bill Henningsgaard was a member of Seattle-based Social Venture Partners foundation, which extended its condolences to his wife and two daughters.

The multi-engine, propeller-driven plane struck two small homes a few blocks from Tweed New Haven Airport as it came in to land.

Authorities have said as many as six people could have died in the crash, including two children in a home.

Washington Nationals rout the Phillies behind early offense from Anthony Rendon and Ryan Zimmerman

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Dan Haren won his third straight winning start while Anthony Rendon and Ryan Zimmerman homered to help the Washington Nationals snap a four-game losing streak with a 9-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

Haren (7-11) limited the Phillies to two runs and four hits over seven innings for his first career win against Philadelphia in eight starts. He struck out seven without issuing a walk.

John Lannan (3-5) allowed eight runs, nine hits and five walks over five innings. The Phillies have lost seven of their last nine games.

Adam LaRoche snapped a 0 for 16 lifetime skid against Lannan with an RBI double in the fourth. Denard Span's two-run single capped a four-run fifth inning. Bryce Harper added an RBI single.

The Nationals went 6 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

Rendon hit a two-run homer off Lannan in the second inning after the umpires confirmed it on instant replay. Three batters later, Zimmerman hit his 13th of the season, which landed several rows deep in the left-center stands.

Washington scored only six runs during a three-game sweep by the NL East-leading Braves this week.

Rather than keep Lannan as a potential fifth starter, Washington signed Haren to a lucrative one-year deal this offseason.

After struggling for the first part of the season, Haren has started to find his groove. He's 3-0 with 1.29 ERA in his last three starts.

Before Friday's matchup, Haren sported a 0-4 record with a 5.54 ERA in seven career starts against Philadelphia. That included three starts this season, all ending in Washington losses.

This time he held the Phillies without a hit until Michael Young's one-out double in the fourth. Chase Utley followed with an RBI single, cutting the lead to 4-1. Philadelphia did not score again until the seventh by which time the Nationals had plated eight.

Lannan spent his first six major league seasons with the Nationals. Known as a groundball pitcher, he allowed multiple home runs for the first time in 13 starts this season.

The Nationals went 1 for 19 with runners in scoring position against Atlanta. They started down that scuffling path in the first as LaRoche struck out with the bases loaded after Lannan issued two walks and a single.

Another scoring chance came in the second. With Wilson Ramos on second base, Rendon hit his sixth home run for a 2-0 lead.

Consecutive doubles by Ian Desmond and LaRoche made it 4-0.

LaRoche also singled off Lannan in the fifth, setting up Ramos' RBI double. Haren's bases-loaded walk came before Span's two-run single in the fifth.

Ryan Mattheus and Ian Kroll each pitched one hitless inning of relief for Washington.

Notes: Phillies manager Charlie Manuel remains one win short of 1,000 victories for his career. ... Before the game, Philadelphia designated OF Delmon Young for assignment, making room for OF Casper Wells, who the team claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. The first overall pick in the 2003 MLB amateur draft, Young batted .261 with eight home runs and 31 RBIs in 80 games during his first season with thePhillies. ... LHP Cliff Lee (10-5, 3.13 ERA) opposes Nationals RHP Taylor Jordan (1-3, 3.76 ERA) on Saturday.

The Baseball Thesaurus

We?re nearing the end of the first print run of The Baseball Thesaurus, and we have a special offer to help you celebrate the upcoming All-Star Game: autographed copies of the Jesse Goldberg-Strassler tome.

Baseball is a sport with its own lingo ? a colorful patois that?s developed over the years and millions of games. In The Baseball Thesaurus, a fascinating compendium of baseball terms, Jesse Goldberg-Strassler ? broadcaster, storyteller, talker, voice ? explains what baseball terms mean and how they came to be. Whether it?s Red Barber talking about the pea patch or Ernie Harwell discussing no-hitters, the language of America?s Pastime is brilliantly captured by Goldberg-Strassler. Sluggers deposit a Ballantine Blast in the nosebleeds. The top of the lineup sets the table for the heart of the order. Corner infielders guard the line. A lumberjack with a bad wheel staggers down the line while a glovesman flashes leather.

The Baseball Thesaurus is the first book published under the Lineup Books imprint from August Publications, publisher of Websites (ballparkdigest.com, springtrainingonline.com) and books. To mark the upcoming All-Star Game, we?re offering autographed copies of The Baseball Thesaurus for those ordering the book directly from August Publications (see link below). The offer is exclusive to orders off this site (sorry, we can?t offer it from Amazon or Barnes & Noble).

The Baseball ThesaurusWho should read The Baseball Thesaurus? It?s for the media linguist whose job relies upon baseball jargon, the radio listener, the blog reader, the talk-show caller, the minor-league diehard, the Strat-O-Matic connoisseur, the seventh-inning stretcher, the stereotype breaker, the crank, the postgame fireworks enthusiast, the t-ball coach, the seamhead, the baseball Annie, the hot-stove moper, the bandwagoner, the purist, the casual rooter who enjoys a quick tidbit and has no need to attend both games of a doubleheader, and the fan who takes pride in scoring the game and teaching the tradition to others.

?For fans old and new, Jesse Goldberg-Strassler?s thesaurus is a romp. On first glance, it?s a primer on baseball?s peculiar taxonomy and traditions, but open any page and you?ll find lots more, including amusing anecdotes and witty wordplay from the game?s great characters. Goldberg-Strassler has built a dugout in which Al Capone, James Earl Jones, and George Carlin lounge happily alongside Dizzy Dean, Cool Papa Bell, and Zoilo Versalles. A lollygagger?s delight!? ? John Lott, baseball writer, National Post, Toronto

?What an incredible resource ? I can?t get over the amount of work and the detail that went into this book. A great window on baseball?s lexicon from days of yore to the game today. This book won?t be far from my side next season.? ? Dan Dickerson, Voice of the Detroit Tigers

WWE.com dating Q&A: The Bella Twins

Take a tour of John Cena's house: Total Divas, Aug. 4, 2013Nikki and Brie Bella prove they're city girls at heart: Total Divas bonus clip, Aug. 4, 2013Catch a new episode of "Total Divas" this Sunday on E!John Cena, Daniel Bryan & Randy Orton vs. The Shield: Raw, August 5, 2013The Shield charges the ring after Randy Orton declares he will be WWE Champion: Raw, August 5, 2013WWE RANK'D: Brock Lesnar's Greatest AttacksThe Bellas challenge Daniel Bryan and John Cena to a wood-chopping contest: Total Divas, Aug. 4, 2013

The WWE Universe has gotten a peek behind the curtain of Diva love lives on E!?s ?Total Divas,? but none more so than The Bella Twins, whose relationships with John Cena and Daniel Bryan have taken center stage on the hit show. As the ups and downs of relationship life unfold, Nikki & Brie joined WWE.com for an exclusive chat on their romantic triumphs and tragedies, the one thing they both want in a man, and how a first date at a McDonald?s might not be so bad.

Without further ado, we give you The Bella Twins.

WWE.COM: You both obviously have very different personalities, as we?ve seen on ?Total Divas.? What?s the one thing you agree about when it comes to finding a boyfriend?

NIKKI BELLA: I would definitely say humor. Brie and I both love humor. We both love to make each other laugh, so humor would be one.

BRIE BELLA: You?re gonna lose looks when it comes with age, but if you have that sense of humor, it will always keep things great in a relationship.

Watch: "Total Divas" episode 1 highlights

WWE.COM: What?s an ideal date night for The Bella Twins and their men?

NIKKI: Ooo, this is a good one. We love to go to dinners, dress up, have a nice bottle of wine and a good medium-rare steak. So, definitely a nice restaurant with some nice wine and great ambiance. We need great ambiance and music. We like easy listening to jazz.

BRIE: An ideal night for myself and my boyfriend would be going to the farmers market, making ourselves a nice meal and then anything outdoorsy. We love walking, going hiking, and then, ending the night together watching a fun movie.

WWE.COM: What is one perk to dating someone on the WWE roster and one downside?

NIKKI: The one upside is, even though we?re on the road all the time, we actually get to see our boyfriends a lot, which usually doesn?t happen, because usually the boyfriends are at home. So that?s def a perk. Downside ? I haven?t found one yet. When I do, I?ll let you know, but as of right now I?m still on cloud nine and everything is perfect.

BRIE: I?d actually have to agree with Nikki with the perk. Being that we?re always gone and not home, it?s nice to see our boyfriends on the road. But, gosh, the downside would have to be that because we?re so busy in this world together, when we go home there?s still the craziness and busyness because we?re both in chaos. I feel like sometimes we always have to remind ourselves, ?We need to slow down. Just because our work environment is crazy, doesn?t mean we need to bring the craziness home.?

Ruth's Q2 Earnings, Rev Beat Again

One of the leading upscale dining operators, Ruth?s Hospitality Group Inc.?s (RUTH) second-quarter 2013 earnings of 20 cents per share beat both the Zacks Consensus Estimate and comparable year-ago quarter?s earnings of 17 cents by 17.6%. Earnings in the quarter received a boost from the company?s higher top line and margin expansion.

Quarterly revenues increased 4.8% year over year to $101.8 million and surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $101 million by nearly 0.8%. Higher restaurant sales and increased franchise income drove the top-line during the quarter.

Behind the Headlines Numbers

Company-owned restaurant sales climbed 4.3% year over year to $95.1 million, led by a 4.3% rise in average weekly sales, increased traffic growth and higher comps gain at Ruth?s Chris Steak House restaurants.

During the quarter, comps at Ruth?s Chris Steak House grew 4.6%, driven by a 2.1% rise in entr?es and a 2.5% increase in average guest check. However, comps in the quarter were slightly affected by the time shift of Easter to the first quarter. Moreover, comps at Mitchell?s Fish Market were down 1.4%, due to a 2.8% decline in traffic, offset by a 1.5% rise in average guest check.

During the quarter, franchise income jumped 12.5% to $3.6 million, gaining from 3.6% and 3.2% rise in domestic and international comps, respectively, at franchised restaurants and higher unit expansion.

The company?s operating margin expanded 150 basis points (bps) to 10.7% in the reported quarter, driven by top-line growth, lower food cost and better menu pricing.

During the quarter, restaurant operating expenses as a percentage of restaurant sales was 50.3%, down 74 bps year over year, attributable to minimized occupancy costs. Food and beverage costs as a percentage of restaurant sales also declined 180 bps to 30.4% benefiting from the reduction in the beef costs and 2% improvement in menu pricing.

Store Update

At the end of the quarter, Ruth?s Hospitality operates nearly 150 company-owned and franchised restaurants worldwide.

Outlook

Heathrow, Fla.-based, Ruth?s Hospitality has revised its full year 2013 outlook. The company now expects its cost of goods sold, as a percentage of restaurant sales within 31.5%?32.5%, down from the previous estimate of 32.5%?33.5%. Restaurant operating expenses, as percentage of restaurant sales, will continue to be within 50.0%?51.0%.

Our Take

With the help of its sales-building initiatives, continued margin expansion and growing franchise businesses, Ruth?s Hospitality has succeeded in posting solid earnings and revenue growth in the past three quarters. The Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) company is also focusing more on expanding its Ruth?s Chris Steak brand, as it continues to perform well. Moreover, moderating beef cost positively impacted the margin, going ahead.

Some other players in the restaurant industry which is expected to perform well, going ahead, include Burger King Worldwide, Inc. (BKW), Buffalo Wild Wings Inc. (BWLD) and Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. (CBRL). All these companies carry a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

EPA Looking at Contaminated Sites for Renewable Energy

There are a lot of contaminated sites in the US. Many are former landfills that are urban mounds of varying size, and they are often devoid of trees. This makes them good candidate sites for solar power or other forms of renewable energy. This is a win-win opportunity in many instances!

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently updated its RE-Powering Mapping and Screening Tool, which will now provide preliminary screening results for renewable energy potential at 66,000, up from 24,000, contaminated lands, landfills, and mine sites across the country. The RE-Powering America?s Land Initiative, started by EPA in 2008, encourages development of renewable energy on potentially contaminated land, landfills and mine sites when it is aligned with the community?s vision for the site.

?We see responsible renewable energy development on contaminated lands and landfills as a win-win-win for the nation, local communities, and the environment,? said Mathy Stanislaus, assistant administrator for the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response. ?In President Obama?s Climate Action Plan, the administration set a goal to double renewable electricity generation by 2020. By identifying the renewable energy potential of contaminated sites across the country, these screening results are a good step toward meeting national renewable energy goals in order to address climate change, while also cleaning up and revitalizing contaminated lands in our communities.?

Pulling from EPA databases of potentially and formerly contaminated lands, as well as partnering with state agencies from California, Hawaii, Oregon, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, and Virginia, the RE-Powering Initiative expanded the universe of sites from 24,000 to more than 66,000 sites. Working in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy?s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), RE-Powering developed screening criteria for solar, wind, biomass, and geothermal potential at various levels of development. The sites are tracked by EPA and selected state agencies.

The updated screening provides insight into the significant potential for renewable energy generation on contaminated lands and landfills nationwide. For solar energy alone, EPA identified over 10,000 contaminated sites with the potential to install a 300-kilowatt solar array or greater. Based on mapped acreage, these sites could cumulatively host solar energy systems that capture greater than 30 times more solar energy than all renewable energy systems operating in the United States today.

The RE-Powering Initiative supports the transformation of liabilities into assets for surrounding communities. Since RE-Powering?s inception, more than 70 renewable energy projects have been installed on contaminated lands or landfills. These early projects represent just over 200 MW of installed capacity, which could power approximately 30,000 homes, and provide a foundation for future development as demonstrations of the latest technologies in both renewable energy and remediation design.

Time-out: San Diego mayor takes 2-week leave for therapy amid sex harassment allegations

SAN DIEGO ? Therapists say admitting one has a problem is the first step toward recovery. For San Diego Mayor Bob Filner that could be tricky.

The first-term mayor and former congressman starts two weeks of intensive therapy Monday while facing a sexual harassment lawsuit and calls for his resignation amid a flurry of allegations that he groped women for years.

Even as he undergoes treatment, Filner is set to be grilled by lawyers under oath this week in a lawsuit brought by his former communications director that claims he asked her to work without panties, told her he wanted to see her naked and dragged her around in a headlock while whispering in her ear.

Neither Filner nor his office has released details about his therapy or its location. Filner is picking up the tab for the treatment.

Filner's accusers, his one-time supporters and voters have expressed skepticism that any two-week program is an appropriate remedy for what Filner himself has described as years of inappropriate behavior toward women. Longtime therapists also questioned how much progress could be made.

"It is pie-in-the-sky to think that in two weeks anyone could be a new man," said Helen Friedman, a St. Louis psychologist who has treated compulsive sexual behavior for 30 years, though she said it was a good start.

Success will depend on how far the 70-year-old Filner goes in acknowledging his problems, experts said.

"Typically in the first few sessions you have to find someone you really trust," said Lilli Friedland, a Beverly Hills psychologist who advises business executives on sexual harassment. "'Can I open up with all my dirty laundry, and is this person expert enough?' It takes a number of sessions and visits to establish that trust."

Some voters wondered whether the therapy stint was simply an effort to buy time amid extraordinary pressure to resign.

"He needs to save face," said Christina Imhoof, 72, who voted for Filner in November but then quit the Democratic Party over the allegations. She said she suspects Filner will return after the time-out and say his therapist has encouraged him to resign for medical reasons.
