Yesterday afternoon I participated in my first ever Twitter chat, hosted by Hybrid Pedagogy (@HybridPed):?The Course as Container, a #digped discussion. I took so much away from this conversation, felt completely welcome as a grad student and new instructor, and am excited about incorporating some of these ideas into my own pedagogy and classroom space. What I think impacted me most profoundly was the idea of course-as-lab, gathered/networked learning, and teacher-as-designer. We?ve talked so much about shifting the focus of the classroom onto the students rather than the instructor, but in the end I am still standing there in front of the room, providing information and facilitating activities, and in the end assigning grades based on a number of criteria. I?ve been thinking so much about how little I know, and how intimidating it is to be the ?teacher? amongst 25 students whose knowledge/beliefs/values/experience are immensely valuable, yet they remain silent (whereas mine are somehow performed, worn, displayed, I earned my role, right?). We even talked a bit about mapping, and I really hope to see that come to fruition if I can figure out how to pull it off.
