(AP) ? Urban Meyer's first Big Ten game as Ohio State coach turned out to be a classic welcome to the conference.

His quarterback got shaken up twice, but Braxton Miller kept coming back on the field, and in the end the Buckeyes played just well enough defensively to come away with a bruising victory.

"This was a war. This was two sledgehammers going at each other," Meyer said. "I know the Big Ten has taken some heat. That was a great game. Great atmosphere, a bunch of great players on the field that are going to be playing at the next level, and that was good for college football and good for the Big Ten."

Miller threw for 179 yards and ran for 136, and No. 14 Ohio State held off No. 20 Michigan State 17-16 on Saturday. Miller put Ohio State ahead 17-13 with a 63-yard touchdown pass to Devin Smith in the third quarter, and the Buckeyes' maligned defense held Le'Veon Bell and the Michigan State running game in check.

Meyer becomes the third coach to start 5-0 in his first season at Ohio State. Carol Widdoes and Earle Bruce also did it in 1944 and 1979.

Michigan State (3-2, 0-1) has lost four home games in a row against Ohio State.

The Buckeyes (5-0, 1-0) aren't eligible to win the Big Ten title because of sanctions, but they handed the Spartans an early loss.

Michigan State took a 13-10 advantage in the third on a terrific individual effort by Keith Mumphery. With the ball on the Ohio State 29 after a personal foul call on the Buckeyes, Mumphery took Andrew Maxwell's short pass and eluded four tacklers before dragging a couple more Buckeyes into the end zone.

The lead didn't last long. Miller managed to pick up a first down, just barely, with a run on third-and-1, then lofted a deep pass on the next play to Smith, who beat Johnny Adams along the right sideline to put Ohio State ahead to stay.

"We hook up all the time," Miller said. "That's one of my favorite receivers, so I'm always going to look for him."

Miller turned the ball over three times in Michigan State territory, including a fumble early in the fourth ? but the Buckeyes actually caught a break on that play. The ball bounced right to Kurtis Drummond of the Spartans, who began running down the right sideline before the play was blown dead and Miller was ruled down.

The call was reversed after a review, giving Michigan State the ball at its own 32 ? but the Buckeyes were saved from a big return that would almost surely have followed if the call had been correct to begin with.

The Buckeyes then appeared to have stopped the Spartans when Maxwell underthrew a pass on fourth-and-1 from the Ohio State 44, but Travis Howard was called for defensive holding on the opposite side of the field, keeping the drive alive.

Dan Conroy's 48-yard field goal pulled Michigan State within a point with 7:07 remaining.

Miller remained down holding his left knee after his fumble but was able to come back the next time Ohio State had the ball. The Spartans forced a three-and-out anyway and took over at their own 20 with 5:39 left, down 17-16.

They could manage only one first down before having to punt, and they never got the ball back.

Miller was 16 of 23 with an interception. Maxwell went 22 of 42 for 269 yards.

"Braxton Miller is a very exciting player," Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said. "We knew that coming into the game. He took a lot of bad plays and made them good ones. ... I thought Maxwell played well enough to win. He threw the ball very effectively."

Bell came in with 610 yards on 117 carries, but he ran for only 45 yards against Ohio State. The Buckeyes' defense was ranked last in the Big Ten before the game.

"A great team win," Meyer said. "We found out something about our team today, to go on the road in a hostile environment against a quality, quality football team and find a way to win."

Ohio State drove 75 yards in eight plays to open the game, taking a 7-0 lead on Jordan Hall's 1-yard scoring run. Miller had runs of 20 and 13 yards on the drive, but he was hit along the sideline at the end of the latter one and was shaken up.

He had to leave the game but was back for his team's next possession.

The Spartans answered immediately with a 34-yard field goal by Conroy, and that was all the scoring for the half. Miller threw an interception and lost a fumble in second quarter, but Conroy missed a 42-yard attempt in the final minute.

Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) | DarkMedia.com

by Julianne Snow:

[Low Spoiler] Synopsis:

In the opening scene of Resident Evil: Extinction you learn that the Umbrella Corporation is still hard at work, though it does remain to be seen if their research is aimed at helping the world or not?

We are then treated to a recap of events from Resident Evil: Apocalypse; showing that the T-Virus was not isolated to Racoon City and sets the stage for the world the survivors are forced to live in now.

With the world a dried up wasteland of abandoned cities, we join Alice on the road as she travels from place to place, doing what she can to find answers and help humanity. After being tricked into a deadly situation, she escapes and through a series of events, finds a journal that indicates that perhaps there is a safe haven after all.

Meanwhile, in another part of the former USA, a convoy of vehicles is crossing the desert. Among that convoy are familiar faces (LJ and Carlos) along with some new ones. Alice hears them over the CB radio, but decides not to join them until circumstances prove it is her only option.

With the Umbrella Corporation looking for a cure for the T-Virus or perhaps just a way to better control it, their only hope is to capture Alice alive.

Waking up one morning, surrounded by a flock of infected crows, the convoy decides to make a break for it. In a scene developed to make you afraid of birds again, they attack and Alice helps to save the day. In the end, the group hears about a potential salvation and decides it may just be their best chance. Their only concern is will Umbrella let them get there?

Their destination: The coordinates of the Safe Haven

Their mission: Escape the Infection

Their fate: Did you really think I was going to tell you?

Review:

The plot of Resident Evil: Extinction isn?t as seamless a fit as the other two films. You are left with unanswered questions such as: where is Jill Valentine? What about Angela? You catch up with other characters like LJ and Carlos, but there is no mention of the fates of the others still alive at the end of Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Part of this issue rests with the fact that the plot of Resident Evil: Extinction does not pick up directly after the end of Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Some time has passed and you?re getting a glimpse into the world after the proliferation of the T-Virus. Trust me; it?s not a word you?d want to live in.

The characterization picks up where it left off and you begin to see what Program Alice is really all about. There were glimpses in Resident Evil: Apocalypse, but the full extent of her powers were not revealed. Milla Jovovich is true to form as Alice, making her the second female actor in my humble opinion to really epitomize a role (the first is Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley). Standout performances are delivered by Ali Larter as Claire and Mike Epps as LJ, in addition to Jovovich.

If you?re looking for zombie action, you?re not going to be disappointed. The scenes where the convoy gets attacked and in Las Vegas will be enough to chill you to the bone. The requisite unexpected scare moments are there, so generally I don?t think you?ll be disappointed. I?m even going to justify my rating which is based in part on the unanswered questions I had after watching the film.

Resident Evil: Extinction is available on DVD and Blu-ray from?Amazon.com.

Browns wide receiver Greg Little cannot hang onto a pass as Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb breaks up the pass in the fourth quarter during their NFL game in BaltimoreReuters

The Browns aren?t happy about the failure of receiver Greg Little to catch the football.? But the reality is that, unless and until they have a better option, they?ve got no choice but to work with him.

And so they will.

?We had some drops,? coach Pat Shurmur said after Thursday night?s loss to the Ravens, which included seven drops by the Browns receivers, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.? ?Not acceptable.? There?s zero tolerance for that.? I will say this: We have some tough guys out there playing that are not catching the ball efficiently enough, and we just need to keep working with them.? That?s the reality of it.?

Of course, that?s not what ?zero tolerance? means.

But with zero options, zero tolerance can?t be applied as defined.? And so, despite the tough talk, the Browns will have to try to help Little finish the job.

?Great receivers make great catches,? Little said, adding that quarterbacks coach Mark Whipple told Little after dropping a potential touchdown catch that the second-year receiver would still ?get a chance to pull out your big driver.?

Again, that?s not zero tolerance.? It?s arguably the exact opposite of it.

Either way, the Browns need the exact opposite of what they have been getting from Little.

Apple?s CEO Tim Cook apologizes for Apple?s Map app

Apple has been hit hard by the critics and users regarding the Maps app in iOS 6. Apple removed the Google-powered iOS Maps application and replaced it with their own in-house app that?s powered by
Tom Tom. The biggest drawbacks of Maps are the inaccurate mapping data, lack of public transit routes, and missing street and addresses that caused controversy since it was released.

News organizations have compared the problems with Maps to the previous iPhone 4 ?antennagate? problem that happened days after Apple launched their iPhone 4 2010. The matter has gained so much
criticism from bloggers and customers of iOS devices that Apple?s CEO Tim Cook published an?

String of Iraq car bomb blasts kill at least 17

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A string of car bomb blasts targeting mainly police checkpoints killed at least 17 people across Iraq on Sunday, police and hospital sources said.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Violence in Iraq has eased since its height in 2006-2007 when sectarian fighting killed thousands of people, but Sunni Islamists and an al Qaeda affiliate still launch regular attacks, seeking to undermine the Shi'ite-led government.

The most deadly explosion took place in Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of the capital Baghdad, where bombs in three parked cars went off separately, killing eight people and wounding 22.

A suicide bomber in a car blew himself up in the city of Kut, 150 km (95 miles) southeast of Baghdad, killing four policemen, police and local officials said.

In Baghdad, a parked car bomb killed two people in a northwestern district. Another blast near a public market in Khan Bani Saad, 30 km (20 miles) northeast of the capital, killed one civilian and wounded several policemen.

Two more policemen were killed when a car bomb went off in the town of Balad Ruz, 90 km (55 miles) northeast of Baghdad.

Biocompatible electronics for health monitoring vanish when no longer needed

Friday, September 28, 2012

An interdisciplinary team of researchers from Northwestern University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Tufts University are the first to demonstrate "transient electronics" -- which are electronics that gradually disappear on a specified schedule, whether it be a few days or six months.

These kinds of electronics could have applications in medicine, pharmaceuticals, environmental monitors and the military, among other uses.

Conventional electronics are made to last indefinitely. Transient electronics, on the other hand, offer the opposite behavior. They physically vanish over time in a well-controlled manner and at a prescribed time, dissolving when they react with water. A magnesium oxide encapsulation layer and silk overcoat envelops the electronics, and the thickness determines how long the system will take to disappear into its environment.

"These electronics are there when you need them, and after they've served their purpose they disappear," said Yonggang Huang, who led the Northwestern portion of the research focused on theory, design and modeling. "This is a completely new concept."

The novel technology opens up important possibilities. Transient electronics could be useful as medical devices implanted inside the human body to monitor such things as temperature or brain, heart and muscle tissue activity, to apply thermal therapy or to deliver drugs. When no longer needed, the electronics would be fully absorbed by the body with no adverse effects. (Implantable electronics are not commonly used in medicine because of concern about the long-term effects.)

Such a system also could be used as environmental monitors placed on buildings, roadways or military equipment to detect temperature change or structural deformation. The device would dissolve when exposed to water, eliminating the need for it to be recovered at a future date.

Details of the biocompatible electronics will be published in the Sept. 28 issue of the journal Science.

"We selected materials familiar to the human body, such as magnesium," said Huang, a senior author of the paper and the Joseph Cummings Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. "We didn't want to use a material the body has no experience with."

While the researchers studied a number of different biocompatible materials, including zinc and iron, they focused on silicon-based electronics with conductors made of magnesium. The key question they needed to answer was: How long will it take the entire electronic device to dissolve?

The device is made up of the electronics and encapsulation layers (a magnesium oxide layer covered by a silk overcoat) surrounding the electronics. The encapsulation layers are the first to dissolve and dictate the first dissolution timescale. The magnesium electrodes in the electronics define the second timescale. These combined lengths of time determine the dissolution time for the entire system.

John Rogers, the Lee J. Flory-Founder professor of engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, led the overall multidisciplinary research team and the U. of I. group that worked on the experimental and fabrication work of the transient electronics.

Huang and his Northwestern team developed a model that can accurately predict how thick the encapsulation layers need to be for a specific dissolution time. The model was tested against experimental evidence, and the two agreed each time. (With a reliable model, the researchers don't need to keep repeating experiments.)

At Tufts, Fiorenzo G. Omenetto, professor of biomedical engineering, led the biomaterials and chemistry work and conducted a series of in vivo experiments to demonstrate bio-resorption and biocompatibility.

In the study, the researchers built several functional devices that are dissolvable, including field-effect transistors, resistors, diodes, a heater and a strain sensor. All the components of each electronic system disappear, and right on the programmed schedule.

The researchers demonstrated that the transient electronics, including heater, sensor and power supply, can operate in both water and a phosphate buffered saline (PBS) liquid. (PBS is very chemically similar to what is in the human body.) They also implanted the transient electronics in a mouse model and showed that the heating device was effective and could kill bacteria.

Induction coils provide a wireless power supply to the electronics. "This way the devices in water or PBS liquid can have power without being physically connected to a power source, such as a battery," Huang said.

The materials tested by the researchers are biocompatible, which is important for implantable electronics. Magnesium is an element found in the body, and the material also is used in some stents. Silk is approved for sutures and in tissue engineering. Other materials studied, such as magnesium oxide and porous silicon, also are biocompatible.

The materials, fabrication techniques and modeling tools can be used for component devices for almost any type of transient electronic system, the researchers said.

Li Han ousts Lindaweni Fanetri to surge into Women?s Singles final at Indonesia Open GP Gold

China?s emerging player Li Han proved her mettle on court as she surged into Women?s Singles final after showing a tremendous performance in semi-final contest and ousted the home favourite Lindaweni Fanetri at Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold Badminton 2012 on Saturday, September 29, in Indonesia.

The second seeded Han, who has been putting up spectacular show of dominating badminton, continued her roller-coaster run in the semi-final contest and registered a decent victory over the local shuttler Lindaweni.

Han played to her maximum potential throughout the battle and she managed to end it up in straight games with a tight margin by taking 48 minutes on court.

In the meanwhile, the un-seeded Lindaweni failed to make her winning streak prolonged as she could not play aggressive game in the ending points and eventually lost the battle in straight games with a decent margin on the board.

Both ladies showed their incredible skills on court as they played attacking and positive badminton and pushed each other in all areas to take advantage on court.

However, in the ending points of first half, it was Han who played smart badminton and executed controlled shots which helped her to take an 11-8 advantage on score board.

After the break, Lindaweni injected more power into her smashes and also took the bird early at net which assisted her to make the score levelled at 13-13.

From this stage, both shuttlers played at their best and reached at the ending points without taking any lead.

The Indonesian player was at 20-19 but failed to score the last point as Han played impressive badminton and got three consecutive points to finish up the set with a 22-20 score on the board.

In the second game, Han was clearly in control of rallies as she dictated Lindaweni in all areas of the court and managed to take an incredible 11-6 lead until the break.

After the mid-game interval, Lindaweni played better badminton and managed to make the score levelled at 12-12 but failed to stop her Chinese challenger from winning the set with a 21-18 score on the board.

Han overpowered Lindaweni in this interesting semi-final battle in 48 minutes with a tight margin of 22-20 and 21-18.

Bioengineers design rapid diagnostic tests inspired by nature

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? By mimicking nature's own sensing mechanisms, bioengineers at UC Santa Barbara and University of Rome Tor Vergata have designed inexpensive medical diagnostic tests that take only a few minutes to perform. Their findings may aid efforts to build point-of-care devices for quick medical diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), allergies, autoimmune diseases, and a number of other diseases. The new technology could dramatically impact world health, according to the research team.

The rapid and easy-to-use diagnostic test consists of a nanometer-scale DNA "switch" that can quickly detect antibodies specific to a wide range of diseases. The research is described in an article published this month in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

The design was created by the research group of Kevin W. Plaxco, a professor in UCSB's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He noted that, despite the power of current diagnostic tests, a significant limitation is that they still require complex laboratory procedures. "Patients typically must wait for days or even weeks to receive the results of most STD tests," said Plaxco. "The blood sample has to be transported to the lab, its content analyzed by trained personnel, and the results sent back to the doctor's office. If we can move testing to the point of care, it eliminates the lag between testing and treatment, which would enhance the effectiveness of medical interventions, and, for infectious diseases like STDs, reduce transmission."

The key breakthrough underlying this new technology came from observing nature. "All creatures, from bacteria to humans, monitor their environments using amazing 'molecular nanoswitches' that signal the presence of a specific target by changing their structure," said Alexis Vall?e-B?lisle, a postdoctoral scholar and co-first author of the study. "For example, on the surface of our cells, there are millions of receptor proteins that detect various molecules by switching from an 'off state' to an 'on state.' The beauty of these switches is that they are able to work directly in very complex environments such as whole blood."

Plaxco's research group teamed with Francesco Ricci, professor at University of Rome Tor Vergata and co-first author of the paper, to build synthetic molecular switches that signal their state via a change in electric current. This change in current can be measured using inexpensive electronics similar to those in the home glucose test meter used by diabetics to check their blood sugar. Using these "nature-inspired" nanoswitches, the researchers were able to detect anti-HIV antibodies directly in whole blood in less than five minutes.

"A great advantage of these electrochemical nanoswitches is that their sensing principle can be generalized to many different targets, allowing us to build inexpensive devices that could detect dozens of disease markers in less than five minutes in the doctor's office or even at home," said Ricci.

The authors noted that it may take several years to bring the devices to the market.

The additional co-authors are Fan Xia of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China; and Takanori Uzawa of Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan.

This work was funded by the National Institute of Health, the Fond Qu?b?cois de la Recherche sur la Nature et les Technologies; the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR) project "Futuro in Ricerca;" and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, through the Grand Challenges Explorations Grant.

Health care reform ? what do physicians think? ? Health ? Bangor ...

Physicians agree on ? maybe ? two things. First, they agree they don?t agree on anything. Actually, some probably disagree about that. Second, they usually agree that everyone who disagrees with them is wrong. It should therefore come as no surprise that physician opinions about health care reform cover more territory than a bad rash.

That is reflected in physician opinions about President Obama?s Affordable Care Act, or ACA, in particular. Talk to five physicians and you get five opinions that sometimes overlap, sometimes don?t, and are almost always strongly held. And as we know, opinions are like bacteria ? everyone has them and some of them are nasty. That?s why a Florida urologist who probably had a big prostate clouding his thinking put a sign on his office door telling Obama supporters to seek care elsewhere.

The difficulty understanding what physicians think about all of this is compounded by the fact there are few really good surveys of them on these issues, and results of them seem contradictory. One of those ? a survey of 2,694 physicians commissioned by the Jackson Healthcare System ? found 55 percent felt the ACA should be scrapped, but one-third of respondents felt the act did not go far enough and a single-payer health system was needed. That means some of those who felt the law should be scrapped did so because they thought it went too far, and others thought so because it did not go far enough.

On the other hand, a 2009 survey of 2,130 physicians found 62.9 percent supported universal insurance through public (government-sponsored) and commercial options. They differed on how to achieve that universal insurance, with 25 percent supporting commercial insurance as the only option, and less than 20 percent supported government-sponsored insurance as the only option.

Despite this diversity of opinion, general patterns of physician perspective have emerged. Perhaps two-thirds support some kind of insurance for all Americans, because most recognize that lack of insurance puts their patients in jeopardy. Just as there seems to be an emerging consensus among physicians, there is also one among their professional associations (such as the American Medical Association and the American Osteopathic Association) that all Americans need access to comprehensive, affordable health care, and that some kind of insurance is required to ensure that access. That evolution is part of what brought the AMA from its position in the 1960s opposing the formation of Medicare to its position in 2011 in support of the ACA.

In fact, the AMA?s website suggests continued advocacy on the issue; it has a banner running across its website policy page detailing some of the impact of the ACA since its implementation: 3.1 million Americans under age 26 insured under their parents? insurance plans, 54 million Americans who have had expanded coverage of preventive health care, 5.1 million Americans on Medicare who have paid less for prescriptions, etc.

This growing consensus among physicians that all Americans must have access to ongoing, affordable health care has probably been driven, I believe, by the tremendous suffering that lack of insurance causes our patients. We cannot escape seeing it every day. Our experience is reflected in a painful avalanche of studies that has now proved beyond a doubt that lack of insurance kills thousands of Americans each year ? friends, colleagues, family members, and other fellow Americans. You cannot watch this parade of preventable misery walk through your ER or office each day and not be moved to conclude that something must be done.

Despite the range of opinions among physicians, here?s my prediction: If most Americans are not insured in another five years, a large majority of physicians will support any means necessary to make that happen, even a single government insurance plan such as Medicare for all. We don?t agree on much, but most of us agree we cannot sit by and watch millions of our patients suffer, and thousands of them die each year, for lack of comprehensive, affordable care.

Erik Steele, a physician in Bangor, is chief medical officer of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems.

Long-Term Care Insurance And Your Loved One

Miscellaneous Written by Anonymous ??Friday, 28 September 2012 07:31 Insurance is a rather common purchase; people buy car insurance, health insurance, homeowner???s insurance, and even renter???s insurance. Long-term care insurance is just as valuable as these other policies, as it is designed to assist families in paying for the costs associated with senior care. he home care professionals at Always Best Care of Alamance, serving Alamance and Guilford Counties, as well as the communities of Burlington, Southern Greensboro, Jamestown, High Point, and Roxboro, know that the cost of elder care can become overwhelming for many families. As such, they encourage you to look into the value that long-term care insurance can provide.

hat Is Long-Term Care Insurance?
Long-term care insurance is exactly what it sounds; this kind of policy covers expenses that are associated with the long-term care of elderly individuals. Oftentimes, the assistance of home care professionals is necessary for an elderly individual to continue aging in place. For this reason, families may decide to call in the services of senior care providers, who assist with daily activities. These activities range from one case to another, but many times encompass grooming, dressing, eating, etc.
While the benefits associated with long-term care insurance vary from one plan to the next, this is the kind of assistance that the plan will, generally, cover.
What Should Your Family Look for in a Policy?
As with any form of insurance, long-term care insurance policies change from one company to the next. Likewise, insurance companies may offer a variety of plans to better meet the needs of a wider range of families. The best thing to do when choosing a policy is to talk with your loved one???s doctor to determine what to anticipate in terms of care. Next, schedule a meeting with an insurance professional to discuss the options available.
Collecting the Benefits of a Long-Term Care Policy
Another topic to discuss with your insurance professional is how to collect the benefits that the policy has to offer. The insurance company your family chooses may require you to submit claims on your own or it may work directly with home care providers. Ask your insurance professional exactly how claims are handled and if you will need to personally do anything to ensure that the benefits are dispersed.
The home care professionals of Always Best Care of Alamance know that long-term care insurance is an important part of a family???s financial plan. They encourage you to talk to your insurance provider about the policy options that are available to your elderly loved one.

Washington, D.C. - A study presented at the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery Foundation Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. shows that the MD Hearing Aid line offers a reasonable low-cost solution to those who are not using hearing aids or other amplification devices because of cost concerns.

In the study, researchers at the Michigan Ear Institute sought to evaluate a novel, inexpensive (under $200.) over- the-counter hearing aid regarding to its acoustic properties and also to test the hearing aid on patients with varying levels of hearing loss to evaluate their perceived benefit by using validated questionnaires.

Hearing loss affects approximately 34 million people in the United States, but hearing aid usage rates have historically remained at just 24%. One major reason for this low rate of use is that hearing aids are typically very expensive, with the average cost of a single hearing aid approximately $1,900. Medicare and most insurance companies do not cover this cost. Many medical studies have linked untreated hearing loss in the elderly with a higher risk of social isolation, depression, anxiety, and symptoms consistent with Alzheimer's dementia.

The MDHearingAid was evaluated using a Fonix 6500c Hearing Aid Analyzer, measured according to accepted standards. The measurements included saturated sound pressure level curve, high-frequency average full-on gain, frequency response, total harmonic distortion, equivalent input noise level, and input-output curve. Then the device was tested on a group of participants with mild to moderately-severe hearing loss who were unwilling or unable to purchase a custom hearing aid due to cost considerations. The participants were asked to wear the device for a minimum of 30 days and complete these self-reported surveys: "International Outcome Inventory - Hearing Aids" and "Satisfaction with Amplification in Daily Living".

Researcher Seilesh Babu, M.D. found that the MDHearingAid met the acoustic targets. All participants demonstrated user satisfaction scores that were within the standard range for patients with mild to moderately-severe hearing loss. The study found that the low-cost MDHearingAid is electroacoustically adequate and a reasonable low-cost solution to meet the needs of those value- and cost-conscious patients who were not using amplification via a custom hearing device.

Dr. Babu stated that further development and investigation of these instruments is warranted, to provide a potential opportunity for greater numbers of persons with hearing loss to have access to hearing aids and reap the medical, social, and emotional benefits from improved communicative abilities.

Felice Shapiro: Dating Again? Another Chardonnay, Please!

After my husband died, I remembered hearing that, according to the Jewish religion, a widow was required to mourn for 30 days and then she could "get back out there." And, what's more, the brother-in-law was expected to marry his brother's widow....OH BOY, that wasn't gonna happen! With the Old Testament? as a ?guide, ?I decided to try to go out several months after my loss -- when I could bear to face the world....

And then I came to my senses: "Are you kidding? I have to date? I have to be judged, and maybe get rejected? I have to sit through an evening with some bore?" Are you familiar with the Kubler Ross 5 Stages of Grief ? Well, I added one of my own...and now I was deep into the PISSED OFF STAGE!

And then all my worries were for naught -- no one was fixing me up with anyone. "Doesn't anyone have any friends for me to date?" I polled the girlfriends. NADA! Hey, I was 48 and a widow, and frankly everyone could not believe I was asking. My husband had died just six months before.

And so it happened that I was on Fire Island with a few girlfriends, and one of the women stepped up to the plate: "I want you to be happy. I have an idea of someone you may like." I was taken aback. I'm sure I looked like a swollen-eyed widow but still I couldn't help wondering why no one until then had offered to fix me up.

I was so excited! An adventure! My tummy was all butterflies just imagining sitting at dinner with a date.

I got a call from this man a week later. "Oh yes, of course I would be happy to meet you. Oh, you want me to suggest a place? OK, how about this quiet little restaurant in the next town over?? Perfect!"?We were set -- he sounded fine -- no more, no less, just fine.

I changed my clothes three times, checked my hair, and headed out into the night with a sick feeling in my gut. Yes, this was so typical of me. I wasn't ready to date -- I really wasn't, but I pretended I was just to give myself a push. And now I had to deliver. I had to show up on this date.

He called me -- he couldn't find the restaurant. I tried to help him with directions, but he wasn't getting it.? First judgment on my part: "What a dolt! Why didn't he just use Google maps?"? "Down girl," I told myself. He obviously hadn't put much thought into this date... that's good; it would be a really relaxed evening.

I sat parked in front of the restaurant, and he finally called to say he was parking across the street. I got out of the car and saw a dark-haired, middle-aged man walking toward me. He seemed old. I knew he was 54, but that just seemed old. "Felice, shut your brain off, girl. Just chill and try not to assess."

I smiled and said hello and we walked into the restaurant. I was nervous, and he was not; at least he didn't seem to be.

My first glass of wine went down fast. We went through some of the preliminary background stuff, but each time I tried to explain something, he would ask me more questions that felt wrong -- just wrong. "Oh, you lost your husband...did you love him? Why are you staying in the house that you lived in with him? What are you planning on doing workwise? What kind of movies do you like?"?OMG! Was I really going to have to put my life in list format? Couldn't we just talk about "stuff" and get a feel for humor, intellect, energy??Oh dear!? (And by the way, his looks were not growing on me.)

"Another Chardonnay, please!"

He said he was involved with this organization that does a lot of lobbying. Great! I was psyched... we were going to talk politics. And then he started in on his position on Israel. (Needless to say, it wasn't my position.) The conversation was escalating. I told him he was close-minded, and then I think I called him chauvinistic in his thinking. And what did he do? He laughed! He was getting a rise out of me, and he liked it, but I was getting ready to rise and leave.

Dinner was over... I ate everything on my plate and I finished my wine.?He looked straight at me and said, "So, I don't know why Margie fixed us up. We have nothing in common." I laughed -- this was the first moment I liked him! I loved that he laid the truth out on the table. Big exhale. "I agree," I said. "This is my first date since my husband died, and frankly I had a great time. I loved arguing with you. I don't want to date you, but it was fun to banter, disagree and know that I don't have to end up with you. Ever!"

Out on the sidewalk there was a pause that needed to be filled, and he said, "You are terrific, and you will find someone wonderful. Thanks for a good time."?Back at ya buddy! We hugged and parted.

I called my girlfriend immediately and thanked her. "We argued the whole evening, I hate his politics and he's a chauvinist, but he's smart and frankly, I needed a break from myself. Thank you so much... Got anyone else in mind?'

UK court issues injunction in radical cleric case

LONDON (AP) ? A British court issued an interim injunction Wednesday blocking the extradition of a radical cleric to the United States on terror charges, granting a court hearing for an appeal.

Mustafa Kamal Mustafa ? who is better known as Abu Hamza al-Masri ? challenged his extradition on charges that include helping set up a terrorist training camp in rural Oregon. The appeal marked yet another legal twist in a case that has wound its way through the courts for eight years.

Judicial authorities said in a statement that a date for the hearing would be decided shortly.

Khaled Al-Fawwaz, a second terror suspect, has also mounted a legal challenge before Britain's High Court. No date has been set for the hearing.

Britain's Home Office immediately challenged the appeals. British authorities will seek a court hearing as soon as possible to clear the way for the extradition.

The grounds of the appeal were not immediately clear, but it's certain to stoke an ongoing debate in Britain about extradition laws. Critics have charged that the country's laws allow litigants to drag out their cases.

The appeals follow a European court decision Monday that was believed to have cleared the way for the cleric's extradition and that of four other suspects after an eight-year legal battle.

The Egyptian-born former nightclub bouncer, who claimed he lost his eye and hands fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan, used north London's Finsbury Park Mosque as a base to persuade young Muslims to take up the cause of holy war. The mosque was once attended by Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui and "shoe bomber" Richard Reid.

After the Sept. 11 terror attacks, the cleric praised Osama bin Laden and declared "many people will be happy, jumping up and down at this moment."

He is serving a jail sentence in Britain for inciting hatred.

Burying the hatchet in the laser lab

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Experts have been heavily discussing why exactly electrically insulating materials insulate as they do. Based on different mechanisms, a classification scheme for insulators has been in use since the 1960s -- a theoretical one. However, it has been yet impossible to distinctly classify all insulators due to a lack of suitable experimental approaches. A team of physicists from Kiel University (Germany) and the University of Colorado in Boulder (USA) has now developed a new method to distinguish different insulators unambiguously.

The study was published in the online journal Nature Communications.

No notebook, no cell phone, no digital camera would be functional without electrical insulators. The hunt for precise knowledge about state-of-the-art or future insulators is just as rapid as the development of new, better electronic devices. For this reason, insulator research is currently one of the hottest topics in solid-state science.

Following the common scientific procedures in physics, such insulators are first described using universal equations and simulated by computer models. The theoretical results about materials then need to be verified by experiments in the lab. It is this experimental verification that failed for a number of insulators in the past. ?For many years, expert discussions went round and round without any final answer about the insulator class," says project leader Kai Rossnagel from the Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics of Kiel University. The study presented now provides a completely new experimental approach to classifying the insulating behavior of materials objectively.

The science team made use of a special effect: some electrical conductors turn into insulators when strongly cooled down. At the same time, their electric state changes, and when the materials warm up again, their electronic properties also change. The scientists now use the speed of this change to distinguish different classes of insulators.

Inconceivably small time scales are applied in this method: For the classification, they use a laser beam camera to produce a film from individual images taken within femtoseconds. For comparison: If you took one picture every femtosecond for a period of one second, you would end up with 1.000.000.000.000.000 single pictures, while a regular film camera takes only 24 images per second. ?The electronic changes visible in the film, take about one to 50 femtoseconds for some materials and 100 to 200 femtoseconds for others," Rossnagel explains. In this manner, the scientists can distinguish one insulator class from another.

One of the heavily discussed insulator materials, titanium diselenide (TiSe2), was now precisely classified. On top of the precise classification of TiSe2, the scientists gave the first experimental evidence for a new class of insulators, the so-called excitonic insulators. ?We believe that our results may terminate the discussion about titanium diselenide after decades"; says Rossnagel but admits: ?Only after several years of cross-checking our results, we will know for sure if our method is as useful as we think now."

The new classification method uses a camera technique presented by the same team of researchers in the journal Nature in March 2011. It is called ?femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with extreme UV radiation." The current study was the first systematic application of the new camera technique to a scientific question. The study was carried out within the Kiel Nano and Surface Science, one out of four major research themes at Kiel University. It was funded on the German side by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).

Scoop (2006): Bonding

The clip bonding from Scoop (2006) Tell me about yourself, Peter. This is all so new to me. Well, what would you like to know? Well, I don't know. Anything you'd care to reveal. You know, your hopes, your dreams. Well, I come from a privileged family, as I'm sure you can tell. It was always decided one day I would enter politics. My hobbies are polo and... Oh, I own some racehorses. Hmm. So, how's that for a start? And what are your hopes and dreams? I like to dance and visit museums and, I can cook Chinese food. If you know any good Chinese restaurants... Oh, I've gotten very interested in New Age phenomena recently. Like what? You know, mystical things like astrology and crystals and Tarot. Mmm-hmm. Do you know anything about Tarot cards? Not really. I'm more scientific-minded. I find that if... What are you staring at? Hmm? Oh. You have wonderful enamel. Thank you. You know, I'd love to take you dancing one night. I'm a good dancer. Oh, I would love that. That would be great. Can I confess something? Sure. I just love an American accent, and I find much of what you say very amusing. Oh. I'll take that as a compliment. And since you like Chinese food, I'm gonna have my new secretary send you a list of the great ones in town. Oh, you have a new secretary? Oh, yes. Yes, I'm breaking in someone new. My previous secretary died, a young woman, just very suddenly of a blood clot. It was awful. Did they do an autopsy? How did we get on to this morbid subject? So, you've never seen a real English garden before? Come. I have a couple of treasures.

GAO Finds Alarming Rise in Mobile Malware

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a new report that said government agencies need to do a better job when it comes to warning citizens of the security concerns on mobile devices. It was only a matter of time for this alert ? the GAO has been more vocal about cybersecurity over the past year. As far as I?ve seen, this is the first time the agency has addressed mobile security.

One of the things the GAO report pointed out is the alarming rise in malware on mobile devices. According to the report:

Threats to the security of mobile devices and the information they store and process have been increasing significantly. For example, the number of variants of malicious software, known as ?malware,? aimed at mobile devices has reportedly risen from about 14,000 to 40,000 or about 185 percent in less than a year.

Did I say alarming rise? Wow. I?ve been saying for a long time that we need to think more about mobile security and that it was only matter of time until the bad guys begin targeting mobile devices. But 185 percent in less than a year is high on devices that a relatively small amount of the population own.

One of the problems in the increase of malware is the lack of consumer awareness regarding mobile security. Government and private entities promote security practices, although they haven?t been implemented as consistently as they should be, the report pointed out. However, consumers are too often left in the dark about the risks to their devices and aren?t protecting them as well as they should.

I think the GAO is spot on with its concerns about consumer awareness. The average consumer doesn?t understand how at risk their systems are. Ironically, I took an informal poll of a group of my friends on Sunday night about their security practices on their phones. We were talking about having ICE (in case of emergency) contacts on our phones and how someone else would be able to access those numbers if the phone was password-protected. Well, that problem was easily ?solved? ? only two of us have passwords. So I asked how many had any kind of anti-virus or security apps on their phones, and I was the only one. I think my friends are typical of the average mobile device user who thinks that they don?t have anything to worry about or lose on their phone. After all, Infosecurity stated this:

The GAO said that protection will have to be a multi-pronged effort that takes into account all parties. For instance, mobile device manufacturers and wireless carriers can implement technical features, such as enabling passwords and encryption to limit or prevent attacks. Meanwhile, consumers can adopt key practices, including setting passwords, using two-step authentication and limiting the use of public wireless connections for sensitive transactions, which can significantly mitigate the risk that their devices will be compromised. Unfortunately, many consumers still do not know how to protect themselves from mobile security vulnerabilities, raising questions about the effectiveness of public-awareness efforts.

The bottom line is security has to become more mainstream. We need to talk more about best practices and how to implement them. It could start at the business level ? especially in companies that practice BYOD. Many people learn all they know about computer security from work, so why not spread that to mobile device security as well?
