Japan Launches Cheaper Epsilon Rocket Carrying Telescope For Remotely Observing Planets

The rocket, costing $37 million, about one-half as much as its predecessor, was launched at the Uchinoura Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Japan at 2 p.m. local time, the space agency said.

The rocket, 24 meters in height and 90 tons in weight, placed the Spectroscopic Planet Observatory for Recognition of Interaction of Atmosphere, or SPRINT-A, into its orbit about an hour after the launch. The telescope will be used to observe planets including Venus, Mars and Jupiter from its Earth orbit, the Asahi Shimbun reported.

?The launch vehicle flew smoothly, and, at about 61 minutes and 39 seconds after liftoff, the separation of the SPRINT-A was confirmed,? JAXA said. ?The satellite is currently in good health.?

An earlier attempt on Aug. 27 to launch the rocket was aborted seconds before liftoff as the computer controlling the launch detected a glitch in the rocket?s posture, according to the Asahi Shimbun.

The rocket, employing artificial intelligence to check for errors, was cheaper compared with its predecessor, the M-5, in terms of production as well as launch.

The control center engaged in launching the rocket was staffed by only eight people, versus the roughly 150 who normally work during launches of Japan?s mainstream H2-A rocket.

The launch is expected to move Japan closer to becoming a major power in the international satellite-launch industry.

UCLA, Nebraska Remember Nick Pasquale Before Game

LINCOLN, Neb. -- As 91,471 people stood in silence at Memorial Stadium, balloons floated north.

Blue ones and yellow ones, a rare sight in a town that lives by "Go Big Red." They rose from the southeast corner, released by a student section dressed in all black. Near the front row, someone held a sign that said "N #36," Nebraska's letter emblazoned in UCLA colors. Football would be played soon, but before that Bruins and Huskers fans thought of Nick Pasquale.

The walk-on UCLA receiver died last Sunday in his hometown of San Clemente. He had been walking home from a friend's house when a car hit him. The driver stayed on scene and called 9-1-1, but Pasquale was pronounced dead at 1:27 a.m.

As grief wrenched the Bruins' community, Nebraska extended its hand. The Cornhuskers quickly arranged for a moment of silence before Saturday's kickoff. They wore Pasquale's No. 36 on the backs of their white helmets, mirroring the patch UCLA added to the front of their jerseys.

On Saturday, the Bruins stood on the field in Lincoln. Some looked up at the sky and balloons. Some looked down at their feet or straight ahead.

"It was tough, man," linebacker Anthony Barr said. "That's my guy. That's our guy. He had so much heart and so much soul, and we respect him so much.

"We kind of went out and just played with his spirit."

After UCLA's 41-21 victory, Jim Mora used his first words to thank Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst, coach Bo Pelini and all the Huskers fans for their compassion.

"I thought it was an incredible gesture they made here, and I think it's kind of the class here at Nebraska," Mora said. "You just don't find that in many places."

He stressed he and the team would continue to support the Pasquales. Today the Bruins will bus down to San Clemente Presbyterian, where a service will begin at 4 p.m. The family had come up and spoken to the team on Friday. Nick's father, Mel, asked them to win.

"His father's a very strong man," safety Anthony Jefferson said. "He told us to play for Nick, play to honor his son and the way that he played football.

"I think it was a huge win to honor him and his family." ___

British tea, chocolate and bacon top list of products expats can't live ...

A survey conducted by British Corner Shop ? an online supermarket for British expats ? reveals 20 percent of expats said a proper cup of British tea is one of the things they miss the most.

Top British brands such as Tetley Tea, PG Tips and Yorkshire Tea were named most frequently in the survey, closely followed by Twinings, Scottish Blend and Typhoo.

Mark Callaghan, managing director of British Corner Shop, said: "When people move abroad they often think they won't miss food or drink from home, but millions of Brits drink several cups of tea a day, so giving this up is much harder than you'd think."

Other products mentioned in the survey were chilled items such as cheese, bacon and sausages, with 12 percent naming these as the products they struggled to live without.

British chocolate was also a popular answer, especially Cadbury chocolates such as Dairy Milk, Flake and Roses.

Marmite, condiments such as Branston Pickle, Bisto Gravy Granules and Walkers crisps also made the top 10 most popular answers.

Mark Callaghan goes on to say: "We're not particularly surprised by the products that have made the top 10, the only real surprise was that Heinz Beans didn't place higher, as this is a top selling product on our website.

Mr Callaghan added: "Tea is likely to remain at the top of expats most wanted list, as no matter how you dress it up, no tea tastes as good at the classic British brands."

Here is the full list of the top 10 things Brits miss most:?

?

  1. Tea: 20 percent
  2. Chilled items (including cheese, bacon, sausages, meats and black pudding): 12 percent
  3. Chocolate
